How to Write an Opinion Essay
An opinion essay exists to convince the reader of your point of view. To get a high score in B1, you need a clear structure and specific linking words.
1. Structure your Essay
A good essay usually has four paragraphs:
- Introduction: Introduce the topic and clearly state your opinion (e.g., "I think that...").
- Paragraph 2 (Argument 1): Give your first reason and an example (e.g., "Firstly,...").
- Paragraph 3 (Argument 2): Give a second reason or a contrasting viewpoint (e.g., "Secondly,..." or "However,...").
- Conclusion: Summarize your main idea (e.g., "To sum up,...").
2. Useful Language for Sequencing
Use these words to order your ideas logically:
- Start: Firstly, First of all, To begin with.
- Add points: Secondly, Furthermore, In addition, Also.
- End: Finally, Lastly.
3. Expressing Contrast
To introduce an opposing idea or a problem:
- However: Used at the start of a sentence. "It is expensive. However, it is worth it."
- Although: Connects two clauses. "Although it is expensive, it is worth it."
- On the other hand: Introduces a different point of view.
4. Giving Opinions
Don't just say "I think". Try these:
- In my opinion...
- In my view...
- I personally believe that...
- It seems to me that...
