La respuesta rápida

Usa in para ciudades, países, habitaciones y espacios cerrados. Usa on para superficies y calles. Usa at para puntos exactos y expresiones fijas. Se dice in Madrid, on the wall, at home.

La regla

Elige la preposición según el tamaño del lugar. In marca un espacio a tu alrededor: una ciudad (in Madrid), un país (in Spain), una habitación (in the kitchen). On marca una superficie que puedes tocar: una pared (on the wall), un estante (on the shelf), una calle (on Green Street). At marca un punto exacto: una puerta (at the door), una estación (at the station), o una expresión fija como at home o at work. Los autobuses, trenes y aviones llevan on (on the bus). Los coches pequeños y los taxis llevan in (in a taxi).
