Present simple or present continuous?

The present simple describes a habit or something always true: She works in a bank. The present continuous describes an action happening right now: She is working right now. The difference is not the time you are speaking; it is whether the action repeats or is happening at this exact moment.

The rule

Use the present simple with words like every day, usually, always and never. Use the present continuous with words like now, today, right now and at the moment.

A few verbs describe a state, not an action, and normally stay in the present simple even when you mean now: know, like, want, need. You do not say I am knowing; you say I know.

• I drink tea every morning, but right now I am drinking coffee.
• He plays football on Saturdays.
• Look, it is raining again!
• She knows the answer already.

Common mistakes

• ❌ Look, he swims in the pool! → ✅ Look, he is swimming in the pool! Look points to this moment, so it needs the continuous.
• ❌ He is knowing the answer. → ✅ He knows the answer. Know describes a state, so it stays in the present simple.
• ❌ We are usually meeting on Fridays. → ✅ We usually meet on Fridays. Usually signals a habit, so it needs the present simple.
• ❌ She is speaking three languages. → ✅ She speaks three languages. A permanent fact like this needs the present simple, not the continuous.
