¿There is o there are?

Usa there is con una sola cosa y con los incontables, y there are con los plurales: There is a chair. There is some water. There are four chairs. La forma la decide el sustantivo que va después del verbo, así que hay que mirar hacia delante.

La regla

Esta estructura dice que algo existe en un lugar. Aquí there no indica un sitio: solo abre la frase. El sujeto real es el sustantivo que viene detrás.

Para negar se añade not detrás del verbo: There is not any milk. Para preguntar, el verbo va primero: Is there a bank near here?

Errores frecuentes

• ❌ There is three books on the desk. → ✅ There are three books on the desk. El plural que sigue al verbo decide la forma, aunque la frase empiece por there.
• ❌ There have a shop near here. → ✅ There is a shop near here. El español usa hay, del verbo haber, y por eso se recurre a have. El inglés usa el verbo be.
• ❌ There is not any chairs. → ✅ There are not any chairs. La negación no cambia la concordancia.
• ❌ Yes, there have. → ✅ Yes, there is. Las respuestas cortas también usan is o are, nunca have.
