¿There is o it is?

Usa there is/are para decir que algo existe, sobre todo la primera vez que lo mencionas, y usa it cuando ya sabes de qué hablas, o para el tiempo, la hora y la distancia. There is a cafe on this street. It is very popular.

La regla

There is/are presenta información nueva: dice que algo existe en un lugar por primera vez. Una vez que ese algo ya se conoce, se deja there y se usa it (o they en plural).

It también cumple un segundo papel sin significado propio: el inglés lo usa para el tiempo, la hora, la distancia y estados generales, porque toda frase necesita un sujeto. It is raining. It is nine o'clock. It is two kilometres to the beach.

Errores frecuentes

• ❌ It is a shop near my house. → ✅ There is a shop near my house. Para presentar algo nuevo se usa there is; it exige que el oyente ya sepa a qué te refieres.
• ❌ There is raining today. → ✅ It is raining today. El español dice hay solo para existencia; para el tiempo el inglés usa siempre it, nunca there.
• ❌ There is nine o'clock. → ✅ It is nine o'clock. La hora, igual que el tiempo, siempre lleva it.
• ❌ There is a cat in the garden. There is very small. → ✅ There is a cat in the garden. It is very small. Después de presentar algo con there is, se continúa hablando de ello con it.
