Was y were son las formas del pasado del verbo be. Con ellas hablas del ayer y del tiempo terminado: I was tired. They were happy. Si ves yesterday, last night o un año pasado como 1993, la frase necesita was o were, no am, is ni are.

Was and were on a past timeline
Yesterday needs was or were; today needs am, is or are.
La forma depende del sujeto, igual que con am, is y are. Con I, he, she, it y los sujetos en singular se usa was; con you, we, they y los sujetos en plural, were.
Para la negación se añade not justo después del verbo. Para la pregunta, el verbo pasa delante del sujeto. El verbo be también forma el pasado solo: nunca lleva did.
