İki şeyi karşılaştırmak için comparative kullanılır: taller, bigger, more expensive, genellikle than ile birlikte. Bir şeyi hepsinin üstüne koymak için superlative kullanılır: the tallest, the biggest.

Kural

Biçim, sıfatın uzunluğuna göre değişir. Tek heceli kısa sıfatlar -er ve -est alır: tall, taller, the tallest. Üç heceli ve daha uzun sıfatlar more ve most alır: more expensive. Sonu -y ile biten iki heceli sıfatlarda y harfi i olur: happy, happier.

Comparative genellikle than ile devam eder. Superlative ise neredeyse her zaman önüne the alır. Bazı çok yaygın sözcükler kurala hiç uymaz: good, better, the best.
