These four words replace nouns when we do not specify exactly what we mean. Choosing the right one depends on whether the sentence is positive, negative, or a question. 🎯
| Pronoun | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| something | Positive sentences + offers/requests | There is something in my bag. ✅ Would you like something to eat? ✅ |
| anything | Negative sentences + questions | I do not have anything to wear. ✅ Is there anything I can do? ✅ |
| nothing | Negative meaning (used with positive verb) | There is nothing in the fridge. ✅ He said nothing. ✅ |
| everything | All things without exception | Everything is ready for the party. ✅ She told me everything. ✅ |
Nothing already has a negative meaning. Never use it with a negative verb:
We use something (not anything) in questions when we are making an offer or a polite request:
| ✅ Correct | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| I do not have anything. | I do not have nothing. (double negative) |
| There is nothing here. | There is not nothing here. |
| Would you like something? | Would you like anything? (for an offer) |
| Everything is fine. | All things are fine. (unnatural) |
Say the right thing – with the right pronoun! 🚀
