These three structures look similar but work differently. Getting them right makes your English sound much more natural and precise. The key question is always: are you talking about things in general or a specific group? 🎯
Use most + noun (no article) when talking about the majority of things or people in general:
Use most of when you are talking about a specific, identified group. It must be followed by a determiner (the, my, his, this, these, etc.):
Use the most + adjective to form superlatives with longer adjectives (two or more syllables):
| Adjective | Superlative with the most |
|---|---|
| beautiful | the most beautiful city ✅ |
| interesting | the most interesting book ✅ |
| popular | the most popular song ✅ |
| expensive | the most expensive car ✅ |
| ✅ Correct | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Most people like coffee. | Most of people like coffee. (no the/my after most of) |
| Most of the people at the party knew her. | Most the people at the party knew her. |
| It is the most beautiful place I have seen. | It is the most beautifulest place. |
| Most of my time is spent working. | Most my time is spent working. |
