Prepositions of movement describe direction - where something or someone goes. Unlike prepositions of place (which describe a static position), these tell us about motion. The most important thing is pairing them with the right movement verb (go, walk, run, drive, fly, etc.). 🎯
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| to | towards a destination | She walked to the station. ✅ |
| into | entering an enclosed space | He ran into the building. ✅ |
| out of | exiting an enclosed space | She walked out of the room. ✅ |
| through | moving inside and across something | We drove through the tunnel. ✅ |
| across | moving from one side to the other (of a flat surface) | He swam across the river. ✅ |
| along | moving in the same direction as something long | We walked along the beach. ✅ |
| up | moving to a higher position | She climbed up the mountain. ✅ |
| down | moving to a lower position | He ran down the stairs. ✅ |
| over | moving above and to the other side | The cat jumped over the fence. ✅ |
| past | moving alongside and beyond something | She drove past the school. ✅ |
| around | moving in a circle or curved path | We walked around the lake. ✅ |
| towards | moving in the direction of (not necessarily reaching) | He walked towards the exit. ✅ |
