You already know the present continuous for things happening right now. But did you know we also use it for the future? When something is arranged and confirmed - like a meeting in your diary, a booked ticket, or a plan with another person - we often use the present continuous instead of be going to. 🎯
The form is exactly the same as the present continuous for now - the difference is the time expression or context that tells us it is future:
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | I am meeting | I am meeting Sara for lunch tomorrow. ✅ |
| He / She / It | He is flying | She is flying to Rome on Friday. ✅ |
| You / We / They | They are having | We are having dinner with friends on Saturday. ✅ |
Use the present continuous for future when the arrangement is fixed and confirmed - especially when another person is involved or something is booked:
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| will | Spontaneous decision / opinion-based prediction / offer | I will call you back. (decided now) |
| be going to | Pre-made plan or intention / evidence-based prediction | I am going to learn Spanish. (general intention) |
| present continuous | Fixed arrangement - confirmed with others or booked | I am having lunch with Tom tomorrow. (in the diary) |
Some verbs are stative verbs - they describe states, not actions, and we do not normally use them in the continuous form even for future arrangements. Common ones: know, like, love, hate, want, need, understand, believe, own.
| ✅ Correct | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| I am meeting him at 6. | I meeting him at 6. (missing am) |
| She is flying to Paris tomorrow. | She is fly to Paris tomorrow. |
| What are you doing tonight? | What you are doing tonight? |
Check your diary - you probably have more arrangements than you think! 🚀
