In English, we have two types of verbs. Dynamic verbs describe actions (run, eat, jump). You can use them with '-ing'. But Stative verbs describe a state, feeling, or thought. We almost NEVER use stative verbs with '-ing'!
| Category | Stative Verbs (No -ing!) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Thoughts & Ideas | know, understand, believe, remember, forget | I understand the lesson. |
| Emotions & Feelings | like, love, hate, want, need, prefer | She wants a coffee. |
| Possession | have, belong, own | This book belongs to me. |
| Senses & Appearance | sound, smell, seem, look (appear) | That pizza smells good. |
