Some English verbs (like give, send, buy, tell, show) take two objects: a person (who receives it) and a thing (what is given). There are two correct ways to build these sentences.
| Pattern | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern 1 | Verb + Person + Thing | I gave him a book. (No preposition!) |
| Pattern 2 | Verb + Thing + to/for + Person | I gave a book to him. |
If the thing is a pronoun like it or them, you MUST use Pattern 2 (with to/for).
