English has two main ways to talk about the future: will and be going to. Students often use them randomly - but they have different meanings! The key is to think about whether the decision is new or already made, and whether there is evidence in the present. 🎯
Use will in these situations:
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| A decision made at the moment of speaking - spontaneous | A: We have no milk. B: I will go and buy some. ✅ |
| A prediction based on opinion or belief (no evidence) | I think it will be cold tomorrow. ✅ |
| Offers, promises and requests | I will help you with that. / Will you open the window? ✅ |
Form: will + infinitive without to. Same for all subjects. No -s for he/she/it.
Use be going to in these situations:
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| A plan or intention already decided before speaking | I am going to study medicine. I applied last month. ✅ |
| A prediction based on present evidence you can see | Look at those clouds! It is going to rain. ✅ |
Form: am / is / are + going to + infinitive without to:
| Situation | Will | Be going to |
|---|---|---|
| Decision made NOW | ✅ I will call him. | ❌ |
| Plan made BEFORE | ❌ | ✅ I am going to call him. (I decided yesterday) |
| Prediction with no evidence | ✅ I think she will pass. | ❌ |
| Prediction with evidence | ❌ | ✅ She studied so hard. She is going to pass. |
| Offers and promises | ✅ I will help you! | ❌ |
| ✅ Correct | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| She is going to travel. | She going to travel. (missing is/am/are) |
| I will help you. | I will to help you. (no to after will) |
| Look! It is going to snow. | Look! It will snow. (you can see the evidence) |
The future is uncertain - but your grammar does not have to be! 🚀
