We use comparatives to compare two things, and superlatives to compare three or more. We also use as...as to show equality, and less / not as...as for negative comparisons. The form depends on the adjective length. 🎯
Add -er for comparatives and -est for superlatives. Double the final consonant if it's consonant-vowel-consonant.
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| big | bigger | the biggest |
| tall | taller | the tallest |
| hot | hotter | the hottest |
Use more for comparatives and the most for superlatives. Never use -er/-est with these.
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| beautiful | more beautiful | the most beautiful |
| expensive | more expensive | the most expensive |
| interesting | more interesting | the most interesting |
Memorise these common irregular adjectives.
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | the best |
| bad | worse | the worst |
| far | farther / further | the farthest / furthest |
Use as + adjective + as to say two things are equal. Use not as...as or less...than for negative comparisons.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| as + adj + as | She is as tall as her brother. |
| not as + adj + as | This book is not as interesting as the film. |
| less + adj + than | The sequel was less exciting than the original. |
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| She is more tall than me. | She is taller than me. | 'Tall' is short → use -er. |
| This is beautifullest place. | This is the most beautiful place. | 'Beautiful' is long → use 'most'. |
| This is more better. | This is better. | 'Better' is already comparative. |
| He is as taller as me. | He is as tall as me. | Use base adjective with 'as...as'. |
Remember: Short → -er/-est. Long → more/most. Equal → as...as. Irregulars? Memorise them. 🚀
