When we tell stories, we use two main tenses to show the difference between background actions and main events. 🎯
Use the Past Continuous (was/were + verb-ing) for long actions that were already happening in the background.
Use the Past Simple (V2) for short actions that interrupted the background or for a sequence of events.
| Connector | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| While / As | Followed by Continuous | While I was sleeping, the phone rang. |
| When | Followed by Simple | I was sleeping when the phone rang. |
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I was seeing a bird. | I saw a bird. | 'See' is a stative verb (no -ing). |
| When I was arriving, he left. | When I arrived, he left. | 'Arrive' is a short, finished action. |
Think of the Past Continuous as the camera showing the scene, and the Past Simple as the actor doing something! 🚀
