Reported Speech (also called Indirect Speech) is used to tell someone what another person said in the past. Because the original words were spoken earlier, we usually move the tense one step back. Think of it as looking at a reflection in a mirror — the image is the same, but the perspective has shifted!
When the reporting verb is in the past (e.g., 'He said...'), the verbs in the quote must change. Follow these arrows to see the movement:
| Tense | Direct Speech | Reported Speech |
|---|---|---|
| Present Simple | 'I like coffee.' | → He said he liked coffee. ✅ |
| Present Cont. | 'I am working.' | → She said she was working. ✅ |
| Present Perfect | 'I have finished.' | → He said he had finished. ✅ |
| Past Simple | 'I went there.' | → She said she had gone there. ✅ |
| Will | 'I will help.' | → He said he would help. ✅ |
| Can | 'I can see it.' | → She said she could see it. ✅ |
We don't just change the verbs! We must also adjust pronouns and time to match the reporter's perspective.
Example: 'I will call you today.' → He said he would call me that day. ✅
Students often confuse these two. The rule is simple: Tell needs a person (object), Say does not.
When reporting a question, we don't use 'do/does/did' and we change the word order to look like a statement.
| ❌ WRONG | ✅ CORRECT | TIP 💡 |
|---|---|---|
| She said she will go. | She said she would go. | Always move the tense back! 🕰️ |
| He said me he is happy. | He told me he was happy. | Use 'told' with a person. 👤 |
| He asked me where I am. | He asked me where I was. | Even questions must backshift. ❓ |
| I saw it yesterday. | He said he had seen it the day before. | Don't forget to change the time! 📅 |
