The Third Conditional is used to imagine a past that didn't happen. We use it to talk about regrets, missed opportunities, or hypothetical situations in history. It is often called the 'Unreal Past' because we are dreaming about a different outcome for something that is already over. 🎯
The Third Conditional has two parts: the 'if' clause (the condition) and the result clause. We use the Past Perfect in the condition and would have + V3 in the result.
| Part | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| If Clause | If + had + V3 | If they had seen the iceberg... |
| Result Clause | would have + V3 | ...they would have turned. |
Remember: The Third Conditional is 100% imaginary. You cannot change what happened, but you can imagine a different story.
| The Reality (Fact) 📉 | The Hypothesis (Imaginary) ✨ |
|---|---|
| They didn't have enough boats. | If they had had more boats... |
| The water was freezing. | ...more people would have survived. |
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct | Tip 💡 |
|---|---|---|
| If I would have seen... | If I had seen... | No 'would' in the 'if' part! |
| I would had told you. | I would have told you. | Always use 'have' after 'would'. |
Think of it as a 'What If' time machine. 🚀
