How to describe your favourite place
To write a good description of a place, you need to use descriptive adjectives, talk about what is there, and explain why you like it.
1. Vocabulary: Adjectives and Places
Use adjectives to make your description more interesting.
- Adjectives: beautiful, quiet, busy, relaxing, peaceful, modern, old, big, small, lovely.
- Places: park, café, beach, library, city square, forest, river.
2. Grammar: There is / There are
Use there is for singular things and there are for plural things.
- There is a beautiful lake.
- There are a lot of trees.
- There isn't any noise. / There aren't many people.
3. Grammar: Present Simple
Use the Present Simple to talk about facts and your feelings about the place.
- The park is near my house.
- I go there every weekend.
- I feel very relaxed there.
4. Connectors
Use connectors to link your ideas.
- and: It's quiet and peaceful.
- but: The café is small, but it's very friendly.
- so: I love nature, so I often visit the forest.
- because: I like it because it's a relaxing place.
5. Plan your writing
Before you write, think about these questions:
- What is the place and where is it?
- What does it look like? (e.g. big, small, trees, buildings)
- What do you do there? (e.g. walk, read, meet friends)
- Why do you like it? (e.g. relaxing, beautiful, fun)
