1. Emma is in a clothes shop with her friend Mia. Emma picks up a scarf and says, "I love _____ scarf! It's so soft." Near + singular = this, near + plural = these, far + singular = that, far + plural = those.

This is + possessive + adjective + noun for introducing someone nearby.
2. flowers / those / beautiful / are
Answer: Those flowers are beautiful.
Those + noun + are + adjective (plural, far).

Subject + don't + verb + that + singular noun (far).
4. shoes / are / how much / these / ?

How much + are + these + plural noun (near) for asking about price.

We use 'this is' on the phone or when introducing yourself.
8. books / these / heavy / very / are

These + noun + are + very + adjective (plural, near).
1. You are a friendly English teacher doing a speaking practice session with an A1-level student on demonstratives: this, that, these, those. Imagine you are both in a room together. Ask the student to point at or describe things near and far from them, prompting natural use of all four words. Ask ONE question at a time. Good questions include: 'What is this in my hand?' (describe an imaginary object), 'Can you describe something near you right now using THIS or THESE?', 'Can you tell me about something far from you using THAT or THOSE?', 'How would you introduce me to your friend using THIS IS?', 'How much are these shoes? (imagine you're in a shop)'. When the student uses the wrong word (e.g. 'those shoes here'), gently recast it: 'Oh, you mean THESE shoes β they're right here!' After 5 exchanges, give warm, encouraging feedback and say goodbye. Keep all language at A1 level.
