Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question.
It is midnight. The sky is full of colour. People around the world say hello to the new year — but they do it in different ways.
In Spain, people eat twelve grapes at midnight. They eat one grape for each month. It is for good luck.
In Japan, people listen to bells. The bells ring 108 times. The sound makes people calm and ready for the new year.
In Brazil, many people wear white clothes and go to the beach. They jump over small waves and make a wish.
The traditions are different, but the feeling is the same. Everyone hopes for a happy new year.
This A1 English reading text looks at how people celebrate the New Year in three countries: Spain, Japan, and Brazil. Each country has a different tradition, but they all share the same hope for a happy year ahead. The text uses short sentences and the present simple tense, so it is easy for beginners.
As you read, you practise scanning for specific facts — which country does what, and the numbers twelve and 108 — and comparing customs from different parts of the text. The six comprehension questions check these skills, and every answer points to the sentence that proves it.

1. What is the same in every country?
الإجابة: People hope for a happy new year
Correct. The last paragraph says 'the feeling is the same. Everyone hopes for a happy new year.' The grapes, white clothes, and bells are different traditions in different countries, not the same everywhere.
2. In Spain, what do people eat at midnight?
الإجابة: Twelve grapes
Correct. The passage says 'In Spain, people eat twelve grapes at midnight ... one grape for each month.' It is grapes, not apples, cake, or rice.
3. Why do people in Spain eat one grape for each month?
الإجابة: For good luck
Correct. The passage says the twelve grapes are 'for good luck'. It never says people eat them because they are hungry, because grapes are cheap, or to stay awake.
4. How many times do the bells ring in Japan?
الإجابة: 108 times
Correct. The passage says 'The bells ring 108 times.' The number 12 belongs to Spain's grapes, so it is a distractor placed here to test careful reading.
5. What do people in Brazil wear?
الإجابة: White clothes
Correct. The passage says 'In Brazil, many people wear white clothes and go to the beach.' Red clothes, coats, and hats are never mentioned.
6. What do people in Brazil do at the beach?
الإجابة: They jump over waves and make a wish
Correct. The passage says they 'jump over small waves and make a wish.' Eating grapes is from Spain and ringing bells is from Japan, so those answers mix up the countries.
